A commercial truck route already has to consider truck access and physical restrictions. A Hazmat load adds another question: is this type of dangerous cargo allowed on this road, bridge, or tunnel?
Modern commercial routing systems can accept a dangerous-goods category as part of the vehicle profile. When the map contains the corresponding restriction, the routing engine can avoid roads that prohibit that category.
Hazmat routing still depends on the full truck profile
Hazardous cargo does not replace ordinary commercial-routing inputs. The route may still need to account for the truck's dimensions, weight, axle information, and general truck restrictions.
How a commercial routing engine handles Hazmat restrictions
HERE's current truck-routing documentation separates restrictions into several groups: legal restrictions, physical restrictions, hazardous-material restrictions, tunnel categories, and time-dependent restrictions.
For hazardous materials, HERE supports a shipped-hazardous-goods parameter. When a specified dangerous-goods category is prohibited on a road represented in the routing data, that road can be excluded from the route calculation.
Hazmat cargo and tunnel restrictions are separate routing concerns
One detail that matters technically is that dangerous-goods categories and tunnel categories may be separate settings. HERE explicitly notes that setting the hazardous-goods value does not automatically set a tunnel category, and vice versa.
In other words, correctly describing the cargo may not be enough if a regulated tunnel category also needs to be supplied to the routing engine.
Official Hazmat route designations still matter
In the United States, Hazmat routing is not determined by a navigation vendor alone. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration maintains the National Hazardous Materials Route Registry, which identifies designated, preferred, and restricted routes reported by routing agencies.
State and local requirements can also apply. For a specific shipment, drivers and carriers should verify current routing requirements with the appropriate official sources rather than assuming a navigation route is the final legal determination.
Why adding Hazmat can change an otherwise legal truck route
Imagine two identical tractor-trailers traveling to the same destination. Their height, weight, width, and length are identical. One carries ordinary freight; the other carries regulated hazardous material.
A road or tunnel may be legal for the first truck but restricted for the second because the cargo changes the applicable routing rules. A true Hazmat-aware route can therefore be longer even when the trucks themselves are physically identical.
What Hazmat navigation cannot guarantee
Commercial routing depends on the quality and coverage of the map and restriction data. HERE notes that truck-restriction coverage varies by region; where restriction data is unavailable, the route may not be able to evaluate dimensions, weight, or hazardous-material restrictions.
Regulations can also change, temporary closures can occur, route designations can be revised, and shipment-specific requirements may exist outside the routing database.
For that reason, professional drivers should always follow current official requirements, posted signage, permits, carrier procedures, and safe judgment.
