Truck Dimensions & Route Profiles: Why Height, Weight, Width & Length Matter

A commercial navigation system can only calculate a truck-specific route if it knows what kind of vehicle it is routing. Height, weight, width, length, axle load, trailers, and cargo information can all change which roads are appropriate for a particular truck.

The key principle: the truck profile should describe the vehicle that is actually on the road. If the dimensions or weight are wrong, the routing engine may not be able to apply the correct known restrictions.

What is a truck route profile?

A truck route profile is the set of vehicle characteristics a commercial routing system uses when calculating a route. Instead of treating every truck the same, the routing engine can compare the profile with truck-related road restrictions represented in the map data.

HERE documents vehicle properties such as height, width, length, current weight, gross weight, and axle load as inputs that help the routing engine consider more physical and legal restrictions. A generic truck mode is useful, but a fully configured truck profile gives the routing system much more information about the actual vehicle.

The core dimensions that affect truck routing

Why truck height is one of the most important profile values

Height determines whether the vehicle can physically clear a known bridge, tunnel, or other overhead restriction. If the route profile says a truck is 13 feet 6 inches tall, a routing system can evaluate that height against known vertical restrictions.

Example: two trucks are headed to the same receiver. One is 12'4" tall and the other is 13'6". A route containing a 12'10" clearance might be usable for the first truck and unacceptable for the second. The destination is identical; the vehicle profile is what changes.

Current weight and gross weight are not the same thing

Commercial routing may distinguish between the truck's current actual weight and its maximum gross weight. HERE describes current-weight restrictions as applying to the vehicle's weight at that point in the trip, including goods and trailers, while gross-weight restrictions relate to the vehicle's loaded maximum capacity.

Depending on the road network and applicable restriction, one of those values may matter more than the other. That is why a complete profile is more useful than a generic “truck” setting.

Axle weight can change the route too

Some roads and bridges have axle-load restrictions in addition to total-weight restrictions. HERE supports both weight-per-axle and weight-per-axle-group inputs for commercial routing.

A truck may be within a total gross-weight limit and still violate a specific axle restriction. Commercial routing can only evaluate that kind of rule when the relevant axle information is available to the routing system.

The trailer is part of the routing profile

A common mistake is thinking only about the tractor. For combination vehicles, the overall profile should reflect the full vehicle-and-trailer setup.

HERE explicitly notes that when a vehicle tows trailers, properties such as current weight, gross weight, length, and similar values should include the trailer combination. Its documentation also supports trailer count and trailer-specific dimensions.

Example: a tractor by itself may be far shorter and lighter than the same tractor pulling a loaded 53-foot trailer. The commercial route should reflect the combination that is actually being driven.

What happens when truck dimensions are missing?

HERE's truck-routing documentation warns that if relevant vehicle parameters are not supplied, some restrictions cannot be evaluated against the actual vehicle. General truck-access restrictions can still be considered, but physical restrictions tied to height, weight, width, length, or axle load require the relevant vehicle values.

In practical terms, “truck mode” by itself is not the same as a fully configured truck profile.

Why different trucks can receive different routes

Consider three vehicles headed to the same warehouse:

  • A 26-foot straight truck at 11'8" tall.
  • A standard tractor-trailer at 13'6" tall and 80,000 pounds.
  • A permitted oversized load with greater width and weight.

Each vehicle may encounter different physical and legal restrictions. A commercial routing system can therefore choose different roads even though the origin and destination are identical.

Accurate input does not mean perfect routing data

A correct truck profile is only one side of the equation. The routing database must also contain accurate and current restriction information. A bridge clearance, road restriction, or weight limit can be missing, outdated, changed, or temporarily superseded by construction or local signage.

Drivers should always obey posted signs, permits, road closures, dispatch requirements, and safe professional judgment even when the truck profile is configured correctly.
